On "Berlin Heat" TV series, I worked in 3 roles: Art Director, Concept Artist, and Matte Paint Artist. Our task was to transform the live-action sets and streets of Saint Petersburg into a convincing 1943 Berlin. Matte painting was used in more than 350 shots, including 150 unique matte paintings. I led a team of five artists and also created many of the concepts and matte paintings myself. Some work:
Berlin streets: Developed the visual concept and matte paintings to transform location footage into authentic German streets. Maintained a consistent look while extending the streets across multiple camera angles.
Ship degaussing cables: Researched historical references and transformed ordinary ropes into specialized cables. After the director approved the look, I handed the pipeline and remaining shots in the sequence over to an outsource team.
Cathedral background: Designed a historically accurate Catholic cathedral to replace a low-rise building and strengthen the scene’s mood. Created the final matte painting for integration into the shot.
